Sports Injury Physical Therapy
Whether the injury you are facing is due to high intensity, impact, or a collision on the field, ActivePT can help. We are experts in rehabilitation of muscle, bone, and joint injuries. ActivePT is aware of an athlete’s competition schedule and we can often accommodate appointments within 24-48 hours of your injury. A referral from your doctor is not necessary, but we may refer you to a doctor or specialist if your condition requires additional examination. Start enjoying your sport or hobby again with the help of a physical therapist who can teach you how to get your injury to heal faster and reduce the risk of re-injury.
All ActivePT clinic locations have access to a fitness facility. Our partnerships give you full access to the club amenities during your therapy session and for a limited time around your appointment time each visit. As a bonus, our Rochester location also provides access to aquatic therapy in a warm water pool, indoor walking track, and all the equipment you need to return you to your best potential.
Getting Back in the Game
The time frame required to return to your sport depends on the severity of your specific injury. ActivePT recommends combining your physical therapy sessions with an exercise regime to get you back into the game as soon as possible without risking a repeated injury. Active rest can be a helpful solution while you heal. Instead of just taking two weeks off, we want to modify your activities and keep them pain free while you recover from your injury. Implementing self help tips can increase the rate of healing prior to your scheduled appointment with the physical therapist.
Self Help Tips
- Ice is important as it prevents swelling from coming into the painful area. You should ice immediately after the pain begins and at least four times per day for 15 minutes at a time for the next few days. Icing before bed can also help you sleep better.
- If an area is swollen, compress it and elevate it. Reducing excess swelling can help to reduce the pain faster and with less pain medication.
- Listen to your body. If you pain is moderate to severe in nature, discontinuing sports participation for that day may be necessary. If your pain lasts for more than 48 hours, contacting a physical therapist or your primary physician may be appropriate.
